If you’re thinking of making the move to State College, you probably want to stay in the loop about interesting things going on in the area. Here are a few noteworthy things we’ve been talking about lately!

Here’s what’s been going on:
We loved hosting the Ironman!
Hazy air drifting east from the Canadian wildfires moved aside just in time for Happy Valley to successfully host its inaugural 70.3 Ironman competition. More than 2,400 athletes – including 200 locals – from 42 states and 8 countries inspired all of us cheering from the sidelines as they swam at Bald Eagle State Park, biked through scenic farmland, and ran 13.1 miles around Penn State’s campus. Volunteers (1,100 of them!) helped keep everything running smoothly and, unique to our event, athletes got to choose between three flavors of Creamery ice cream after crossing the finish line inside Beaver Stadium.
A Big Win for Big Spring
Local distillery Big Spring Spirits entered their American Whiskey into this year’s prestigious New York International Spirits Competition where their entry was awarded 96 out of 100 possible points! They also received a double gold medal, the highest ranking offered in the competition and a stamp of a phenomenal product, as voted unanimously by the panelists.
A County Full of Compost Bins
What did we want?! More composting in Centre County! When did we get it?! Last month!
State College Borough residents with curbside refuse collection have already been living the composting dream, but now, more Centre County locals can participate. There are 5 new drop off sites across the county as a part of a pilot program that will run through October. Afterwards, participation will be assessed and permanent drop off locations decided upon. Are you a local composting newbie, but want to participate? Register here for step by step instructions.
And apparently we’re all having the same conversation?
On July 11, we launched a new line of State College-themed merch. It’s been so fun to hear the responses – and belly laughs! – from State College locals and natives! And while we’ve realized that yes, we’re all lucky to get to spend a good bit of our time hiking on great trails, sending our kids to awesome schools, eating at wonderful restaurants, and enjoying a charming, vibrant downtown? We’ve concluded that we’re all constantly explaining to non-locals where the heck State College is on a regular basis, too. It’s been tough, but we’re in it together. And this shirt seems to help.
Oh! And did you catch these?
We recently published this list of cool things to do around town on a rainy dayand this post (which still makes us laugh!) was one of our Instagram community’s favorites in July.
