State College Lately – March 2023

If you’re thinking of making the move to State College, you probably want to stay in the loop about interesting things going on in the area. Here are a few noteworthy things we’ve been talking about lately!

Here’s what’s been going on…

Dating apps are out. (And dating PowerPoints are IN.)

In February, Voodoo Brewery held their first DateMyFriend.ppt event and it looked like so much fun! Participants gave PowerPoint presentations about their awesome single friends and the winning presentation (voted on by an enthusiastic audience) won a $25 Voodoo gift card.

Downtown restaurant newbies

Word-of-mouth praise has been spreading quickly for both Kokoro (ramen!) and Carter’s Table (taco flights!) as they recently joined downtown’s already vibrant food scene. We now need more days in the week to make regular rounds to all of our favorites!

A UFC debut

Three-time NCAA Division I National Champion wrestler Bo Nickal made his UFC debut on March 4th and beat Jamie Pickett to win in the first round! After an outstanding Penn State wrestling career (he’s considered one of the most accomplished Nittany Lions of all time) Bo stayed in town and made State College home, recently opening local MMA gym American Top Team.

And it’s Spring Break!

Penn State’s spring break is March 6-10. For locals, this means we’re all enjoying a quieter downtown (or getting out of Happy Valley in search of some warmth and sunshine ourselves!)

Oh! And did you catch these?

We recently published a blog post about how nice it is to have a small local airport nearby and this pic was one of our Instagram community’s favorites in February!
