State College Lately – September 2024

If you’re thinking of making the move to State College, you probably want to stay in the loop about interesting things going on in the area. Here are a few noteworthy things we’ve been talking about lately!

Caledonia performs at the Whipple Dam Summer Concert series

Here’s what’s been going on!

Beach Concerts at the Lake

The Whipple Dam Summer Concert Series brings some of our area’s best bands to their stage. People pack picnics and set up beach chairs in the grassy areas or on the sandy beach. For the last Sunday evening of the four-part series on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, Caledonia Band rocked out with their Americana covers and originals. Kids and adults were splashing in the lake as the band played — a few folks were dancing along with their feet in the water.

All Kinds of Summer Camps

Have a kiddo who loves spending time in the woods? Shaver’s Creek Summer Camp has adventures for kids ages 4-14 with the added bonus of adventurous parents being invited to pitch a tent on the final night of the camp. For the kids who love singing, dancing and performance, Singing On Stage is the place to spend a camp week or two. The Makery has all kinds of camps for kids who want to get messy with clay, paints, photography and more. For kids who are into science, Science – U Penn State Summer Science Camps and Discovery Space have options from robotics to bugs. You can even find a Circus Camp at Phoenix Gymnastics for your aspiring juggler or tight rope walking kid.

Full Moon Supper Clubs

Imagine coming together with other community members/strangers in a beautiful setting like a local farm or a flower field to share a delicious meal and marvel at the moon?! The Hidden Hostess, Chef Rebecca Dale, hosts Supper Club Dinners under the full moon each month at different locations around Central PA. And did you know that the full moons have names? This summer’s Sturgeon Moon, Strawberry Moon and Flower Moon were celebrated by Supper Club attendees with five course meals highlighting the season’s local bounty.

Swim Team: Fun for the Whole Family

Sharks, Bullfrogs, Dolphins and Penguins represent four different swim clubs from Centre Region Parks and Recreation, Science Park Recreation Area (SPRA) Pool and Penns Valley. Kids ages 5-18 can participate and the early morning practices (sometimes evenings for older kids) are a great way to start the day — especially when there’s pancakes or donuts. Swim meets are a party for the whole family with impressive volunteer run concession stands and creative themes like superhero night and red, white and blue night.

Pop-Up Store Opens Downtown

Creatives, artists and entrepreneurs can rent a store in downtown State College for $1 for one month in an initiative to breathe more life into Calder Alley. For the month of July, local designer bag company, Bixi Awotan, and ceramic artist, Kara Kyle, sold their works along with a few other local designers, artists and collaborators. They invited community members to come shop with refreshments as they browsed colorful leather bags and gold leafed ceramic dishes — a truly fun way to socialize and support local artists.
